For nearly a decade, I led BlackBerry’s graphic design team within Industrial Design, managing artwork production for hardware and accessories through every stage—from initial concept to manufacturing. A core focus was on the design of the signature physical keypads that defined the Bold and Passport devices. We rigorously refined typography, colour contrast, and accessibility using Rod McDonald’s Slate Pro typeface, and produced cohesive multilingual layouts—ensuring the tactile keyboard experience met our high standards .
My team became a fully integrated part of Industrial Design through hands-on collaboration with engineering, product, marketing, and supplier partners. We also crafted iconography that aligned seamlessly with BlackBerry’s UI standards. This collective effort resulted in visually unified, user-friendly devices that reinforced the brand’s identity and upheld its industrial design vision.
Noteworthy among our work were two standout devices: the Bold, celebrated for its premium full-QWERTY keyboard, and the Passport, a square-form smartphone with an innovative touch-capable keypad that earned prestigious awards including the iF Design Award and Red Dot “Best of the Best” in 2015 .
In addition to core products, I led the graphics for exclusive, limited-edition collaborations with Porsche Design, Lewis Hamilton, and Selfridges—ensuring both the device and its packaging elegantly integrated BlackBerry’s identity with each partner’s aesthetic. The result was a line of collectible devices that married bespoke luxury visuals with brand cohesion.
